First set the start times and bibs in **Prepare the start lists**. Then download the timing file from **Exports & Downloads**, under **Timing software**. This `.canichrono` file opens in Canichrono.

## Step 1: prepare the start lists

In the event dashboard, **Management** section, open **Prepare the start lists**.

1. At the top of the screen, choose the race and the run to prepare. A race can have several runs, for example one per day.
2. Tap **Unpaid** if you also want to show entries that are not paid yet.
3. Tap **Setup Starts** to build the list automatically:
   - **Departure Times**: enter **First start at** as hours:minutes:seconds. Then choose **One wave only**, or set the **Wave size** and the **Interval** between two waves.
   - **Gender separation**: choose **Alternate Men/Women**, **Men first** or **Women first**.
   - **Bibs**: enter the **Start number**, the **Qty per reg (Bibs)** and, if needed, the **Numbers to skip (e.g. 13;42)**.
4. Tap **Generate Configuration**. The start order is drawn at random, and follows the gender separation if you asked for one.
5. If needed, adjust a **Start** or **Bib** cell by tapping it. To swap two competitors, select both and tap **Reverse**.
6. Save with the round button at the bottom right. The message **Saved** confirms it.

> **CAUTION**
Generating overwrites the start times and bibs already entered for the run shown. If a time is badly formatted, its cell turns red and saving is refused with the message "At least one departure time is invalid (red box), please correct it before saving."

The **Share** button gives you a link to pass on to a volunteer. Anyone with this link can view and edit the start list, even if they are not an event organizer. Do not share it publicly. More details in [Prepare the start lists](/en/docs/organizer/start-lists/).

## Step 2: validate the documents

Before you download the list, validate the entrants' documents online (licenses, medical certificates, vaccines) from **Validate documents**. The status of each document is included in the timing file. See [Entry and document statuses](/en/docs/reference/registration-statuses/).

## Step 3: download the Canichrono file

1. In the **Management** section of the dashboard, open **Exports & Downloads**.
2. Under **Timing software**, tap:
   - **Paid registrations (Timing)** to export only paid entries;
   - or **All registrations (Timing)** to also export unpaid entries.
3. A file named after your event, followed by the download date and time, is downloaded with the `.canichrono` extension (for example `canicross-de-benfeld-2026-10-08-08h15.canichrono`). If you downloaded it several times, open the most recent one.
4. Open this file in Canichrono. The video [Manual timing guide](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lL74pNCC_-I) (in French) shows this step in the software.

From **Prepare the start lists**, tapping **Export** then **Canichrono** takes you to the same page. **Export** then **Excel** downloads the start list as a spreadsheet. This is handy to display it or keep a paper copy.

> **NOTE**
**Paid registrations (Timing)** only filters entries if the option **Payment is required before entries close.** is turned on in the event's payment settings. Otherwise, all entries are exported.

## What the file contains

| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Event | Name, dates, federation |
| Races and runs | Race type, name, date of each run, distance |
| Entrants | Last name, first name, gender, year of birth, category, club, license, bib, team name, dogs, saved start times |
| Statuses | Whether payment, license, medical certificate and vaccines are validated |
| Contact details | Entrants' address, phone and email |
| Categories | The federation's age categories, used for the rankings |

> **CAUTION**
The file contains personal data and a key that lets anyone send results to your event. Keep it on the timing computer and do not share it.

## If the entries change

The file is a snapshot of your entries at the time you download it. After a new entry, a bib change or a start time change, download it again before the race.
